do only males sword tails have sword tails or do some not have any? Is it possible for a sword tail to change its sex if so on what conditions and how?
female swordtails are one of the few species that can change sex. This only occurs with older females than are out of hormones to reproduce and they get a sword.
Now, younger males usually dont have swords, it will grow but in time.
The best way to sex them is by looking at the anal fin. The males have a pointed one, gonopudium and the females have a fan shaped anal fin.
About the swords, ex. my green swordtail i bought at 2 inches without a sword, and now that hes 3.5 -4 inches, he grew a massive sword.
